Editor's View: Dodgy digs - a symptom of flawed funding priorities

Digs. Even the word sounds a bit grubby. What other profession would expect its employees to stay for extended periods in a form of accommodation whose name derives from the Old English word for ditch? There might seem a certain shabby romanticism to the practice but, like many of theatre's outdated traditions, that romanticism is likely to fade in the face of cold, harsh reality.
